Coimbatore: In a drive against speeding by buses, the Transport Department has checked 272 buses and had booked 55 drivers for over speeding. The Deputy Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Circle, K. Yogarajan, told reporters that following complaints about bus drivers resorting to speeding that resulted in causing accidents, a drive was planned across the circle. Regional Transport Officers, Motor Vehicle Inspectors and even enforcement teams were involved in the drive. Of the 272 buses checked in two hours, 20 were from State Transport Corporations, 21 private buses, two educational institutions, two staff buses of private companies besides one tourist taxi and one goods vehicles. While cases have been registered and sent for prosecution, the Transport Department has initiated temporary action on the licence of the drivers, Mr. Yogarajan said.
