LIFE-THREATENING: The damaged median on Trichy Road at Singanallur in the city. - Photo: K. Ananthan
COIMBATORE: Singanallur junction is a potentially risky place for motorists. The median on the road is broken at several places, and large pieces of stone and debris lie scattered around it. This poses a threat to motorists.
Heavy traffic
If the driver is not careful, chances of accidents are very high. Vehicular traffic in the junction is heavy, especially during morning and evenings hours. The risk is more for speeding two-wheelers, for in the absence of a signal at the junction, there are few chances of motorists slowing down. This could lead to accidents. The road is not wide enough, and it is very difficult even for four-wheelers to negotiate the curve, says a regular traveller on this route. The street lights too do not function properly, making it more dangerous for motorcycle and scooter riders at night or when there is low light, she explains.
Metal dividers
The metal dividers also add to the confusion of the road users. Sometimes, they are placed perpendicular to the road. These and the broken medians together make driving seem more like an obstacle course than a road, says an advertising professional who uses a car on this stretch. This problem is something motorists have to confront on almost every road in the city. At several points, these killer medians make their presence felt to pedestrians too. The rubble is shifted to the side of the roads, causing difficulty to walk on the pavements.
Steps to be taken
Corporation authorities say that steps will be taken to improve the condition of the medians. There was a plan to improve the median on Trichy Road like the one on Avinashi Road after widening it, an official said.
