Hari maintains lead

NEW DELHI: Top seed P. Hari Krishna (3.5 points) maintained his half-point lead over the field after five rounds following a day of draws in the six-player Marx Gyorgy memorial chess tournament in Paks, Hungary, on Tuesday.

Playing black, Hari settled for a short 15-move draw in Nimzo Indian with China's Wang Yue (2.5).

Ukraine's Zahar Efimenko and Hungary's Zoltan Almasi continued to share the second spot with three points after a 32-move draw in Ruy Lopez. Hungarians Ferenc Berkes (2) and Peter Acs (1) battled it out for 43 moves following the Reti Opening.

When the action resumes after a day's rest, Hari plays white against Acs.

Barua shares fifth spot

Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua (five points) defeated Twan Berg of the Netherlands in the seventh round of the Dutch Open chess tournament in Dieren on Tuesday. The 41-move victory took Barua to the shared fifth spot with four others. Dutchman Frisbo Nijboer led with 6.5 points.

On a day when the all the four Indians faced Dutch rivals, Saptarshi Roy moved to 4.5 points after drawing with Doel van den in 27 moves. Roktim Bandyopadhyay (4) lost to Willy Hendricks in 74 moves and Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (3.5) went down to Robin Swinkels in 50 moves.

Tania wins

Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev and International Master norm holder S.P. Sethuraman reached 4.5 points after scoring resounding victories in the eighth round of the Biel Masters chess tournament in Biel, Switzerland, on Tuesday.

Tania, playing white, defeated Germany's Roland Arbinger while Sethuraman outplayed Israel's Ben Porat, the second weakest player in the field. Woman International Master Kruttika Nadig (4) drew with Germany's Peter Kuhn.
