DHAKA: The Foreign Ministers of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) have agreed in principle to grant SAARC Observer status to the United States, South Korea and the European Union, further expanding the forum's ambit. The United News of Bangladesh (UNB) said the Ministers reached the agreement at a meeting on the sidelines of the session of the SAARC Council of Ministers that got off to a formal start here on Tuesday. Inaugurating the session, Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia called for the unlocking of South Asia's true potential through faster and deeper economic integration. "The 21st century is Asia's," said the Bangladesh leader, also the SAARC chairperson.
