BANGALORE: The Karnataka aquatics championship, which begins at the KC Reddy Swim Centre here on Thursday, gets a national flavour with all the swimmers in the National camp for SAF Games testing their levels at the three-day championship. The camp itself is loaded with State swimmers such as Rohit Hawaldar, Aaron D'Souza, Rehan Poncha, N.A. Sandeep, J.P. Arjun, Pooja Alva, Shipra and Madhavi Giri. "The State championship will help us to gauge the level of the Indian probables. Depending on their performance, we can re-work our training schedule at the camp," said National coach S. Pradeep Kumar. Pradeep Kumar said that the National swimming camp had gone on well. "There has been no let up and the swimmers are training hard. Barring Arjun Muraldharan and Amar Muralidharan, rest of the selected swimmers are very much there," said the coach. The championship will be conducted on a time trial basis. The senior diving will be held at the Jayangar pool. A notable absentee at the meet will be Shikha Tandon, who trains at the KCR Centre. Shikha had recently undergone a shoulder surgery, said her coach Nihar Ameen.
Hat-trick by Anisha
Anisha Padukone slammed in five goals, which included a hat-trick, and powered Vidya Shilp Academy to a 6-0 victory over St. Francis Xavier HS in the all-India Anglo Indian Association's Bangalore branch inter-school hockey tournament for girls here on Wednesday. Vrishika Melani scored the other goal. In another tie, Ever Shine HS beat Frank Anthony PS 2-1. Navya and Laxmi scored for Ever Shine while Marsha reduced the margin for FAPS. In the semifinals, Vidya Shilp Academy will meet Ever Shine HS and St. Eupharasias `A' takes on Bishop Cotton GHS.
State chess championship
Malleswaram Association will conduct a FIDE-rated State chess championship under the auspices of the United Karnataka Chess Association here from August 16 to 20. The event carries an overall prize money of Rs. 40,000. All outstation players will be provided with dormitory accommodation. Under-19 tournament
United Karnataka Chess Association will conduct an under-19 tournament for boys and girls at the State Youth Centre here from August 11 to 13. The top two players will represent the State in the National under-19 championship, which is scheduled to be held at New Delhi from August 26 to 30.
Inter-collegiate meet
St. Joseph's College of Commerce will conduct its annual SPIEL inter-collegiate sports meet later this month in various disciplines including cricket, volleyball, basketball and football.
