Belgaum: Though the flood threat upstream of the Krishna in the district eased on Wednesday, villages along the banks of the river have been put on red alert following forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sangli and Satara districts of Maharashtra in the next 48 hours. Official sources said rescue teams had been asked to be ready to meet any eventuality if Maharashtra released more water from the Koyna dam in Satara district into the Krishna in the event of heavy rainfall.
Release from Alamatti
They said 2.71 lakh cusecs of water was being released from the Alamatti dam in Bijapur. The release from the Koyna dam on Wednesday morning was 61,820 cusecs. Six of the 13 gates were opened to a height of 11 ft. The sources said the rescue teams had been asked to keep boats and other vehicles ready to shift villagers to safe places in the event of floods. The Chief Engineer of the Alamatti dam had informed the district authorities here of the possibility of increasing the outflow to more than 3 lakh cusecs any time and advised people living in low-lying areas to shift to safe places. Meanwhile, 184 houses in low-lying areas and some villages in the district have been damaged in rain.
