CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday clarified that the State had not granted any permission for training Sri Lankan security forces in Coimbatore. Intervening during a debate in the Assembly, he hoped the Centre would consider this issue. Earlier, S. Kannappan (MDMK) alleged that training was being given to the island nation's security forces in a paramilitary base in the city. He wanted the Chief Minister to ask the Centre to stop such training. In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, MDMK general secretary Vaiko criticised the Centre for providing training facilities to 44 Sri Lankan police personnel in Coimbatore. Mr. Vaiko said at a time when the Sri Lankan Government had "violated" the ceasefire agreement and indulged in "indiscriminate" attacks on Tamils in the island, it was shocking that training had been provided to the island's police personnel. This had upset the sentiments of Tamils here, he said.
