Chennai: The Independence Cup tournament, involving four teams of the Indian Hockey Federation, will be held at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium from August 12 to 16. The teams are the Indian senior team, junior (under-18), Development squad and Tamil Nadu State team. Announcing the programme, Mr. Jothikumaran, secretary, IHF, said the event was designed to provide adequate match practice for the teams before the World Cup in Monchengladbach from September 6 to 17 and the SAF Games in Colombo from August 18. The camp for the SAF Games team under the supervision of Clarance Lobo and Mohammad Riaz began here on Wednesday. The IHF is also planning a seminar for coaches jointly with the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. It is expected that leading coaches along with officials from various districts will take part. There is also a proposal to conduct an umpires clinic during the tournament.
