Racing : Horse
CHENNAI: The Madras monsoon racing season will begin on Saturday, Aug. 5 and go on till Oct. 13. There will be 20-race days. The secretary of the Madras Race Club, Dharmasenan Ebenezer, who briefed the press on Wednesday, said that there will be no increase in the total stakesmoney of Rs. 52, 82, 000 this year. He also announced that, for administrative reasons, the racing fixtures have been rescheduled. The races scheduled for Aug. 17 have been advanced to Aug. 7 and those fixed for Aug. 18 have been postponed to Aug. 19. The highlight of the season will be the Monsoon Cup being sponsored by Dr. M. A. M. Ramaswamy, Chairman, MRC. Mr. Ebenezer said that horses, nine years and above would not be permitted. Over 130 horses are expected to take part. The season is for Madras based horses as well as outstation horses aged six years or below starting from Class IV. The number of races per day has been restricted to six, while the number of horses that will be permitted to run in each race on the All Weather Monsoon track has been increased from six to nine. Twelve trainers and 35 jockeys will participate. As usual tote, jackpot, treble, tanala, quinella, forecast and second horse pools will operate. There will be morning sales of jackpot and treble pools. The race dates: Aug.: 5, 7, 12, 19, 25, 26 and 31. Sept.: 1, 7, 8, 11, 15, 16, 22, 23, 27 and 30. Oct.: 5, 6 and 13.
