Acharya for Udupi today

Udupi: Medical Education Minister and district in charge V.S. Acharya will visit Udupi district on Thursday and Friday.

A press release issued by the Department of Information here on Wednesday stated that Dr. Acharya would inaugurate the Students' Council of the Government Pre-University College at 9 a.m on August 3.

Besides, he would participate in several programmes on that day.

The Minister would participate in the meeting of the district Government Hospital at 9.30 a.m. on Friday.

He would also participate in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers meeting at 10 a.m. — Staff Correspondent

Bag export award

Bangalore: Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML) has won the State level export award for 2004-05 from the Government of Karnataka. BEML director (production) Ramesh Chandra Suthar received the award from Deputy Chief Minister B.S Yediyurappa.

Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) and Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd (KIOCL) have also bagged the State level export awards for 2004-2005 for exports in electronics and communications and products covered under minerals respectively.

Congress activists' demand

TUMKUR: The 10-day Congress campaign, demanding a CBI probe into bribery charges against Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, gained momentum in Tumkur district on its third day on Wednesday.

Over 5,000 farmers and a thousand Congress activists gathered at the new KSRTC bus stand at Kunigal in the morning and shouted slogans demanding that the CBI probe corruption charges levelled by BJP MLC G. Janardhan Reddy and Congress MLA D.K. Shivakumar against the Chief Minister. — Staff Correspondent

Shettar to visit flood-hit areas

GULBARGA: Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar will tour the flood-affected villages in Afzalpur and Jewargi taluks on Thursday for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage and also relief operations taken up so far. Sources said here on Wednesday that Mr. Shettar, who would arrive here via Hyderabad by road, would hold a review meeting with senior officials in the afternoon before leaving for the flood-affected areas. Later, Mr. Shettar will leave for Raichur for a night halt there. — Special Correspondent

Yuvaka sangha inaugurated

Bidar: The Government will consider taking up special programmes for the welfare of barbers, Agriculture Minister and district in-charge Bandeppa Kashempur said in Bidar on Tuesday. He was speaking after he inaugurated the Maharishi Savita Yuvaka Sangha. He asked the association office-bearers to work for the uplift of the community. Sangha president Prabhukumar Bellure, Pandhari Ragapur, Ambadas Dongaragi and others were present, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Rotary Club of Bidar Fort donated 30 desk-cum-chairs to the government primary school in Dhannur (S) village in Bhalki taluk. `Appoint obstetricians, gynaecologists'

Bidar: Forum of Human Rights for Dalit Liberation has demanded the appointment of obstetricians and gynaecologists to government hospitals in Aurad. "There are three posts in the taluk. They are vacant for over three years now. We have written several letters to the district in-charge Minister Bandeppa Kashempur and MLA Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli but in vain," forum leaders said in a letter to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. — Staff Correspondent

Two-wheeler rally against helmet rule

Sirsi: Two-wheeler riders held a rally at Sirsi on Tuesday in protest against the proposed helmet rule. "Wearing helmets should not be made compulsory. Let the choice be left to the riders," said zilla panchayat member G.N. Hegde Muregar after submitting a memorandum to Assistant Commissioner Ramakrishna. Social worker S.K. Bhagwat and advocate Ravi Naik were present.

Tailors take out procession

Sirsi: A number of tailors of Yellapur town took out a procession on the main roads of Yellapur on Tuesday as per the direction of the State Tailors' Association. It was in protest against the failure of the Government to provide for provident fund in the State Budget as assured by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa a few months back. The association also demanded setting up of a tailoring workers' fund board. Yellapur Taluka Tailors Association president Peer Saab and secretary Parushuram Pawar headed the protest march and submitted a memorandum to the tahsildar.
