Congressmen clash, attack sub-inspector

Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Members belonging to rival factions of the Congress clashed at Kamalkur panchayat in Atlur mandal during the second phase of polling on Wednesday. Supporters of Badvel MLA D.C. Govinda Reddy and former MLA V. Sivaramakrishna Rao clashed, resulting in police firing. A group also attacked Kadapa II Town SI Nagabhushanam who was on poll duty.

Mr Reddy's followers reportedly pinned Mr. Nagabhushanam down when the latter questioned the presence of Mr. Reddy and his supporters. Following this, the SI opened three rounds of fire in the air to quell the mob.

With Dr. Sivaramakrishna Rao gaining control of polling in Kamalapur, his native village, Mr. Reddy and his followers called for a poll boycott and left the place. Later, they staged a dharna demanding repoll in Kamalakur panchayat alleging rigging by "a group."

Alleging rigging by Congressmen, Telugu Desam Party members poured water in ballot boxes in six polling stations in Chiyyavaram in Railway Kodur mandal, necessitating repoll there. Telugu Desam members also tore some ballot papers in Pittagunta village in Rampadu panchayat in Kasinarayana mandal leading to a halt in polling.

In Pullampet mandal headquarters in Railway Kodur constituency, villagers attacked about 10 persons who came in a Tata Sumo. Alleging that the "strangers" had come to rig polls, about 30 villagers attacked them with sticks after which the ten persons fled the place with bleeding injuries.
