CHENNAI: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi dismissed All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa's criticism of the free television scheme and wondered how anyone could pass a judgment on the televisions, which are yet to be delivered. He said when the free colour televisions were first announced by the DMK, she went around telling it was a false promise and it would not be implemented. If the DMK had not come forward to implement the scheme, she would have told people that the DMK had cheated the people. But since the DMK chalked out a scheme to implement the promise in about two-and-a-half months, she had nothing else to say, the Chief Minister said. Referring to the criticism of going for global tenders, he said if this was not done, Ms. Jayalalithaa would have asked why the Government did not go in for global tenders. Mr. Karunanidhi said the DMK had not stated that it would give 21-inch colour televisions. The DMK only said that it would give free colour televisions for the poor who did not own one. The televisions came with a two-year guarantee, he said.
