U.P. fined for excess drawal of power

NEW DELHI: The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CREC) on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs. 1 lakh on Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (UPPCL) for excess drawal of power from the northern grid in April this year putting the entire transmission system of the region in jeopardy.

A probe conducted by the one-man adjudicating officer appointed by CERC found UPPCL guilty of violating the directive of the northern region load despatch centre during the month. In view of non-compliance of the directive in the wake of the difficult power situation prevailing in the northern region during that month, a token fine of Rs. 1 lakh has been imposed, CERC said in a statement here.

DUSU poll schedule

NEW DELHI: Kicking off the poll fever in colleges, Delhi University on Wednesday announced the schedule for the Delhi University Students' Union elections. The last date for receipt of nomination papers will be August 25. Scrutiny of nomination papers and publication of the names of nominated candidates will take place the same day.

Candidates must submit bank drafts as security by August 28. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is August 28.

Polling will take place on September 8.

MCD drive continues

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday carried out an anti-encroachment drive at Vishal Enclave in the West Zone targeting illegal extensions and unauthorised constructions in over a dozen shops and five multi-storey buildings that had encroached upon public land.

Though the local people protested and tried to resist the drive, a strong presence of police and para-military personnel ensured that the drive went on uninterrupted.

The drive will continue on Thursday.

Two arrested

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested by the North-West Delhi police for allegedly manufacturing spurious liquor. The police claim to have seized around 700 bottles of spurious liquor.
