Power cuts return to haunt Delhiites

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Unscheduled power cuts returned to haunt residents of Delhi -- particularly those living in East Delhi and South Delhi -- on Wednesday. The power distribution companies resorted to load-shedding of over 400 MW of power due to a shortage in supply owing to problems at the Rihand Power House, Rajghat power plant and Pragati power station.

The information officer at the Chief Minister's control room said the shortage of around 400 MW lasted around four hours. The problem started at about 2 p.m. as there was a forced outage at Rihand Power House that saw the production there drop from 2,000 MW to 1,000 MW. As a result, Delhi began receiving 140 MW less power from this plant.

Simultaneously, there was also a shortage of 55 MW supply from Rajghat and 100 MW from Pragati.

While the Rajghat plant became fully operational later in the day, the situation is expected to improve only on Thursday when the Pragati power plant is scheduled to become functional.

The load-shedding however came as a surprise to most residents since the peak demand for power on Wednesday was only 3,156 MW as against 3,289 MW the previous day. Also it was much less than the 3,639 MW peak demand met this year.
