BANGALORE: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced a three-door bus with separate exits for men and women. The new design was based on the suggestion of a commuter, said BMTC officials. At present, the bus was being operated between J.P. Nagar and Kempe Gowda Bus Station (Route No. 2). As women commuters had to move to the front and the men commuters to the rear doors after boarding from the door at the centre, the women now feel more comfortable. The conductor too finds it easy to issue tickets. The single entry enables him to keep a tab on commuters boarding the bus. Women conductors are deployed in these buses. These buses are designed in such a way that they will not start until all doors are closed. The doors are opened with an automatic response system, which warns passengers not to stand near the door, when it is being opened. The announcement will be made in Kannada and English.
Flexible seat
The seat of the conductor is flexible and can be folded according to the convenience and space available. BMTC has introduced radium stickers to display route number and destination, instead of ordinary painted boards. This helps visibility at night. These buses would be deployed on routes where the number of women commuters is more, they added. Officials said the corporation planned to brand "women only" buses by painting them pink. Ten buses are being operated exclusively for women.
