dated August 4, 1956: Dr. Lokanathan honoured

King Phumipol Aduldej of Thailand has conferred the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand (First Class) on Dr. P.S. Lokanathan, the retiring Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE). The award was made known to Dr. Lokanathan before he left Bangkok prior to his retirement at an official dinner given by Foreign Minister Prince Wan Waithiakon. But public announcement was withheld pending receipt by Dr. Lokanathan of authority to receive the honour by the UN headquarters. UN officials are not allowed to receive honours from Governments generally. A special exception was made by the UN headquaters in the case of Dr. Lokanathan.
