Horror stories

The article "Horror stories from the conflict zone" (OP-ED, Aug. 3) throws light on the grotesque crimes committed by man in the name of land, religion, and what not.

The article on the sufferings of children makes one's heart heavy with sorrow. The supercilious West needs to put an end to Israeli crimes against the people of Lebanon right away.

Lakshmi Mahajankatti,
Kochi, Kerala

The U.S. condones Israeli horrors on the ground that the root cause of the conflict is Hizbollah's presence in southern Lebanon. The root cause of conflict is the location of Israel.

Whatever the original justification for creating the Jewish state, its location in West Asia has caused unending problems. Not only is it unacceptable to its neighbours, it makes no effort to live in peace with them.

Dinkar Koppikar,
Tallahassee, Florida

Despite condemnation from across the world, Israel is firm on continuing its offensive. But it has still been unable to disarm or weaken Hizbollah. Tel Aviv must understand that by killing innocent civilians, it is only creating more enemies. War is a vicious cycle, not a solution for problems.

Neha Khator,
New Delhi

Israeli soldiers are busy killing those who don't even know what the war is or why it is going on. If Israel is honest about target bombing, it should confine it to Hizbollah bunkers. Constant bombing of civilian targets has only helped Hizbollah acquire a heroic status while Israel has become the villain in the eyes of the world.

Anusheel Singh,
Secunderabad

The heavy-handed response of Israel to the abduction of its soldiers has now crossed all limits of acceptability. That the rest of the world is smugly watching the gruesome massacre is a matter of abject shame. Not many may agree but the massacre Israel is perpetrating on the Arabs justifies Hizbollah's existence.

Harish Pandey,
Allahabad, U.P.

Israeli action is not mere use of disproportionate force but collective punishment of civilian population, reminiscent of Nazi Germany and Medieval barbarism. It is designed to instil fear of its overwhelming might in the minds of Palestinians and the peoples of neighbouring states. Gaza is sought to be converted into a prison, and the West Bank carved into Palestinian enclaves forever dependent on the Israeli state. Any resistance will be met with targeted assassinations, mass reprisals, and aerial bombardment.

Harpreet Gill,
New Delhi

While condemning Israel for the Qana killings, let us not forget our own experience with heartless terrorists who struck in Mumbai. And let us also not forget that the selfish survival strategy of terrorists is to entwine themselves with the civilian population in order to expose their opponents to a negative public outcry.

C. Anand Isaac,
Chennai

The only solution to the crisis is for the Lebanese Government to ban, disarm, and disband Hizbollah and ensure that such organisations do not crop up in a different avtaar as they do from time to time in Pakistan. If it does not do so, innocent people will continue to pay the price for no fault of theirs.

S. Balasubramanian,
Chennai
