DEHRA DUN: The Uttaranchal Parliamentary Affairs and PWD Minister, Indira Hirdeyesh has welcomed the passing of the Food Safety and Standards Bill in the Rajya Sabha as a right step though taken after much delay by the Government. Adulteration in food items over the decades has seriously harmed the health of the masses and anyone found indulging in such a heinous act should be dealt with strictly, she told The Hindu on Thursday adding that as a woman she knew that many of the things purchased for the kitchen were adulterated. Expressing grave concern over the increasing incidents of rape and sexual harassment of minors, Ms Hirdeyesh asked the authorities concerned to take the strictest possible action against the guilty. She also wanted the parents to educate and train their children on steps they should take to avoid the evil intentions of criminals. On the widening of roads along the major routes in the State, Ms Hirdeyesh said that she personally drove over the road stretch before the final payments were released to the contractor. Improved roads to Badrinath, Almora, Pithoragarh and Chamoli have added to the tourist influx as nature lovers now find it easier to travel up to the higher Himalayan destinations. The Government plans to beautify the roadsides with plants of select flower and foliage species besides promoting setting up of a chain of small hospitality centres managed by the local youth under the various employment generation schemes, Ms Hirdeyesh said.
