New Delhi: A delegation of MPs belonging to the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday and urged the Government to stop forthwith the training being given to Sri Lankan police personnel at Coimbatore. The MPs, headed by L. Ganesan, handed over to the Prime Minister a letter from party general secretary Vaiko, bringing to his notice the training being imparted by the Central Reserve Police Force to 44 Sri Lankan police personnel.
"Violation of deal"
The letter said the Sri Lankan Government had launched attacks against the Tamils in Sri Lanka, violating the ceasefire agreement. The aerial bombing had killed innocent Tamils. It said it was shocking that at this juncture the Sri Lankan police force was being trained in India. This hurt the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu. The letter, quoting international media reports, said the Sri Lankan Army was carrying 854-armed soldiers in its troop carrier ship to intensify its operations in Tamil areas. Sri Lankan President Rajapakse had reportedly appealed to the Indian Prime Minister to provide Indian naval escort for the ship.
"Aid will be unforgivable"
It said that any such assistance would be an `atrocious and unforgivable action' amounting to India directly helping the Sri Lankan government to pursue its naval, military operations against Tamils. The MDMK MPs along with AIADMK MPs also presented to Dr. Singh another memorandum urging the Centre to ask the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal to expedite its final award.
