Over 48,000 pattas distributed since 1994: Rangasamy

Special Correspondent

Ban on plastic materials, proper maintenance of underground drainage systems sought

Pondicherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy told P. Arulmurugan (PMK member) during question hour in the Assembly on Thursday that the Government had distributed house site pattas to 48,058 poor landless families during the last 12 years since 1994 in the Union Territory.

Mr. Rangasamy also told the member that the Department of Survey and Land Records had distributed pattas to nearly 2,057 families in various villages in the Mannadipet Assembly constituency. The Department of Adi Dravidar Welfare had also handed over pattas to 877 families in the constituency.

The Government was in the process of acquiring more land and eligible poor people, who were yet to be given housing sites, would be distributed pattas soon, the Chief Minister added. The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly A. M. H. Nazeem (DMK) appealed to the Chief Minister to take steps to ban plastic products as they were largely responsible for choking the underground sewerage system in the Union Territory.

Mr. Nazeem intervened during a debate during the question hour to point out the blocking of drainage systems because of plastics.

Earlier, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy told K. Lakshminarayanan (PMC) that a master plan was being finalised for the proper maintenance of the underground drainage system in Pondicherry town. Mr. Lakshminarayanan said that overflow of sewerage water had become a common sight in the town.

S.P. Sivakumar (DMK) referred to the shortage of manpower to maintain the underground drainage systems. There were only 55 workers available to attend to repairs for the nearly 55,000 connections under the drainage scheme in the town.
