Cabinet nod for land acquisitions mooted

Special Correspondent

Chief Minister wants such cases handled and finalised at the highest level

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has directed officials that all major land acquisition cases should be handled and finalised at the highest level. He has asked them to seek prior permission of the Cabinet for issuing the notification for land acquisition anywhere in the State. He made it clear that there should not be any deviations and deletions once the land acquisition process and policy were announced.

Dr. Reddy is also understood to have told the officials to see that the Government comes out with the best land acquisition policy. While evolving a comprehensive and transparent policy, the Chief Minister said, non-governmental organisations and media must also be consulted so that the displaced people got the best compensation.

YSR concern

Sources in the Chief Minister's office said on Thursday that Dr. Reddy was seriously concerned about the heartburn among some farmers and the displaced people and reportedly asked officials to see that they became partners in development. He asked officials to study the Musi-Uppal model, in which the landowners had been made stakeholders along with HUDA.

He said there were apprehensions among the land losers that they would be deprived of the benefits due to them.

Claiming that the relief and rehabilitation package implemented by the Government for the irrigation projects was the best ever, the Chief Minister said the displaced people would not be deprived of their due benefits.

He exhorted municipal administration, HUDA, APIIC and other related agencies to expedite the process of finalising special package such as allotting the displaced people a part of the developed land.
