    VIZIANAGARAM: The district has been experiencing heavy rain for the last 24 hours following depression in the Bay of Bengal.

    The average rainfall recorded till 8.30 a.m. on Thursday was 107.6 mm as against the normal of 195 mm for August.

    Vizianagaram town recorded the highest rainfall of 213.6 mm (till 8.30 a.m.) followed by Poosapatirega and Bhogapuram 175 mm each, Chipurupalli 165.8 mm, Gurla 154.2 mm, Garividi 143.4 mm, Baligipeta 138.8 mm, Merakamudidam 135 mm and all other mandals, except Pachipenta (35.6 mm) and Vepada (45.2 mm), received over 80 mm rain.

    Breach threat

    Some 10 houses were damaged at Kandivalasa and Rellivalasa villages in Poosapatirega and Bhogapuram mandals.

    In Vizianagaram town, rainwater entered several houses in low-lying areas, including Rajivnagar Colony, Municipal Office and Venkatalakshmi Theatre areas, VT Agraharam, Stadium Colony etc.,

    The Municipal Council meeting scheduled to be held in the morning was postponed.

    The three-centuries-old Peddacheruvu spread over 162 acres in the heart of the town was overflowing.

    Tanks full

    A number of minor irrigation tanks in the district were brimming to their capacities and might breach at any time.

    Parvathipuram Revenue Divisional Officer B. Satyanarayana said that the Nagavali was in spate.

    The discharge at Thotapalli barrage at 3 p.m. was 41,200 cusecs.

    As a precautionary step, people living along the course of the Nagavali were asked to move to safer places.

    Following heavy inflows into the Vengalraosagar project, irrigation officials lifted floodgates and allowed water to flow into the Suvarnamukhi.

    Vottigedda, Thatipudi, Andra and Peddagedda reservior projects were also receiving heavy inflows.

    Traffic hit

    The heavy rain dealt a severe blow to farmers as paddy nurseries in several acres were under a sheet of water. Vehicular traffic was hit as a number of trees fell on the Vizianagaram-Palakonda road.

    Traffic was diverted via Kondagandredu.

    On the Parvathipuram-Kooneru road, heavy vehicle operators were asked not operate their vehicles due to soil erosion.
