HYDERABAD: The South-West monsoon turned vigorous over the State as a result of the deep depression. Under its influence, rains were both heavy and widespread and are expected to continue on Friday also but they will be "heavy to very heavy" over Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, Khammam, Warangal, and Karimnagar and only "moderate to heavy"over West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Medak. Accordingly, the State Meteorological Office issued warning to these areas while the Government kept the Collectors on alert. The 24-hour period till Thursday morning saw many places recording season's unprecedented levels of rainfall with Vizianagaram topping the list with 21 cm. Ranasthalam reported 20 cm and Kalingapatnam 19 cm.

The other chief amounts of rainfall received were: Cheepurupalli (17 cm), Pakakonda (15 cm), Bheemunipatnam, Parvatipuram (13 cm each), Araku Valley (12 cm), Veeraghattam, Venkatapur (11 cm each), Cooonavaram, Paderu, Tekkali (10 cm each), Visakhapatnam, Eturu Nagaram, Saluru, Terlam (9 cm each), and Visakhapatnam Airport, Dummagudem, Kaleswaram, Koida, Perur, Palasa and Patapatnam (7 cm each). With this, Srikakulum district recorded 65 per cent excess rainfall for the season so far. It realised 607 mm of rainfall as against its normal of 368 mm. Vizianagaram followed it closely with 40 per cent excess, with the rainfall received so far being 495 mm against the normal of 353 mm. All other districts reported deficit rainfall.
