Naxalite killed

WARANGAL: A naxalite of the CPI(ML) Prathighatana was killed in an encounter with the police near Bussapur in Govindaraopet mandal on Thursday. According to information reaching here, there was an exchange of fire between naxalites and the police at around 6 p.m. About 10 naxalites were believed to have escaped. - Staff Reporter

LAWCET counselling

VISAKHAPATNAM: Online counselling for admission to law course for candidates who have qualified in LAWCET-2006 has been announced. It will be held at six centres from August 11 to 14, according to LAWCET-2006 Convener R. Venkata Rao. Counselling for three-year LL.B course will be held from August 11 to 14 and for the five-year LL.B course on August 14. The following are the counselling centres: Osmania University Centre for Distance Education, Hyderabad; Andhra University International Centre, Visakhapatnam; Acharya Nagarjuna University Students Centre, Guntur district; Sri Venkateswara University's old MBA building, Tirupati; Directorate of PG Admissions of Kakatiya University, Warangal and Directorate of Admissions of Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur. Health varsity courses

VIJAYAWADA: Dr. N.T.R. University of Health Sciences has invited applications from candidates seeking admission into Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT), Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc MLT) and Bachelor of Nursing (B.Sc Nursing) first year courses for the academic year 2006-07. Separate application forms should be submitted for BPT and B.Sc (MLT) courses. The application forms and prospectus can be obtained from August 10 to 24 on payment of cost of applications. Labourer killed

ADILABAD: A labourer Dattu, 18 of Siddharthnagar in Bhanisa town was killed when his house collapsed in the heavy rain in the wee hours of Thursday. His employers — Dalitanand and Nandabai — received minor injuries. - Staff Reporter

SCR special extended

HYDERABAD: The SCR has extended special train no. 715/716 Tirupati-Nagarsol-Tirupati to operate for a month more till September 1 in view of the rush of passengers seeking to travel on the sector. A press release said train no. 715 will run between Tirupati and Nagarsol on August 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 while in return, no. 716 will run between Nagarsol and Tirupati on August 4, 11, 18, 25 and September 1. - Staff Reporter

Teachers' compilation

HYDERABAD: The United Teachers' Federation (UTF) is planning to bring out a compilation of poems penned by teachers. The compilation will be released to coincide with the Teacher's Day celebrations in September, according to UTF general secretary N. Narayana. The UTF took up this exercise to encourage them and entries relating to education field, teachers and contemporary social issues could be sent to the federation office before August 20, he added. - Special Correspondent

Hacked to death

WARANGAL: Unidentified miscreants hacked to death a notorious rowdysheeter Yedla Ravi near Rangampet in Warangal on Thursday. The head and the body were separated and thrown near a church. Passers-by who found the head informed the police. The police identified the victim as Ravi who was involved in four murders and other criminal cases. Internal rivalry between rowdysheeters could be the reason for the murder, the police said. - Staff Reporter

Input subsidy

KADAPA: The Government sanctioned input subsidy of Rs. 1.13 lakhs to farmers who suffered crop losses due to heavy downpour in March this year, Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Thursday. The subsidy was granted for damage to sunflower, mustard and Bengal gram crops in 72.50 hectares including 16.38 hectares in Rayachoti mandal, 52.72 hectares in Veerapunayunipalle mandal and 3.40 hectares in Yerraguntla mandal, he said in a statement. -Staff Reporter

One killed

KURNOOL: One person was stabbed to death and three others received injuries in a clash between two groups in the city on Thursday. According to reports, a gang attacked T. Srinu (25) and his follower Veeranna with knives near Jammichettu around 3.30 pm.

Srinu died and Veeranna was hospitalised with serious injuries. Two others Balu and Kumar relating to other group received injuries.

Old rivalry relating to extraction of sand from the riverbed was said to be the cause of the murder. -Staff Reporter

Astrological conference on August 29

Kakinada : A three-day South-Asian astrological conference would be held at Kathmandu in Nepal from August 29, said Dr Ch Lakshmi Nrusimha Sarma, Andhra circle chief of the All India Astrological federation. Noted astrologers from seven countries are expected to take part in the meet. He said those interested in participating should approach him before August 20. — Correspondent

Students' gesture

ONGOLE : Students of Sri Aditya public school donated Rs. 85,599 to the Sumatra school for visually challenged children, run by the Itrat organistion at Hyderabad, for construction of the school building. Aditya director, K. Nagalingeswara Rao, handed over cheque to Itrat director, N. Tulasi Kumar at Ongole. He presented school children who had collected large amounts with badges, certificates and medals. - Special Correspondent

Man held on murder charge

ELURU : The police on Thursday arrested Goriparthi Ganesh (23) of Yadavapet in Denduluru mandal of West Godavari district for his alleged role in the killing of his wife Venkata Gayatri (17). According to SP M. Jaganmohan Reddy, the accused developed an inferiority complex towards his wife and strangulated her to death in a roadside orchard at night. — Staff Reporter

Senior citizens welfare day

ONGOLE : Senior citizens welfare association is gearing up to celebrate international senior citizens welfare day at Ongole for which granite baron, Anand, donated Rs. 25,000. Association president, Kolla Pullaiah, demanded the Government provide house-sites to senior citizens not possessing a house. He appealed to the Government to increase medical expenses for citizens and provide 50 per cent concession in bus and rail fares. — Special Correspondent

Ph.D awarded to lecturer

ONGOLE : Nagarjuna University awarded a Ph.D to Kona Radhakrishna Murthi, lecturer in C.S.R. Sarma College for his thesis on Mahayana Buddhist studies. - Special Correspondent
