KURNOOL: The Government mooted a proposal for river basin approach to handle river water resources by appointing independent authorities of the rank of Engineers-in-Chief.

The Group of Ministers headed by Finance Minister held several meetings on the issue, according to sources.

According to the tentative proposal, the Krishna basin in Andhra Pradesh limits will be divided into upper Krishna basin and lower Krishna basin. Jurala and Srisailam fall under upper Krishna basin, Nagarjuna Sagar, Pulichintala and Prakasam barrage constitute the lower Krishna basin.

Similarly, the Godavari will be fragmented into lower Godavari and upper Godavari.

The project upstream of Dummugudem falls under upper Godavari and those below it in the lower Godavari. Pennar basin is likely to be treated independent zone.
