Chief Minister orders probe into Devadula project irregularities

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has ordered an enquiry into the action of irrigation officials in making payments to the contractor of the Godavari Lift Irrigation Project II, also known as Devadula. The money was paid even before completion of the works specified in the agreement.

Work reviewed

At a meeting to review the progress of the project works here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister found prima facie that the officials had remitted the amounts without the works being completed. He noted that the contractor had fabricated the pipes without outer concrete covering and without painting the non-corrosion parts inside.

The pipes were found to be made of steel. The Chief Minister ordered collection of interest from the contractor on the amount paid, dismissal of the third party quality control agency for issuing quality certificate -enabling the payment and disciplinary action against the officers concerned.
