Aid sought for victims of chikungunya

HYDERABAD: People affected by chikungunya, mostly tribal women from Mahabubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts, staged an hour-long dharna before the office of Director, Health, on Thursday.

The dharna was staged under the aegis of Andhra Pradesh Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham and among the demands put forth were distribution of 30 kg rice and Rs. 200 to every family where at least one member was suffering from the viral infection.

General Secretary of the sangham B. Venkat also demanded payment of ex gratia of Rs. 3 lakhs each to the kin of those who died due to the viral fever. Recalling that the Government in Karnataka had put into effect a Rs. 20-crore relief package, he demanded that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy announce a similar package with an outlay of Rs. 100 crores.
