Jeev in third place; Chopra's fortune fluctuates

Hokkaido : Jeev Milkha Singh's second round of two-under 70 put him in tied third position in the Sun Chlorella Classic here on Friday.

Playing his back nine first, Jeev remained in firm control of the round and dropping a bogey in each nine were the rare moments of lapses as the Indian slotted four birdies — on the second, ninth, 11th and 17th holes — in his sedate round for a two-day total of three-under 141, along with Prayad Marksaeng.

Both Masaya Tomida and Mitsuhiro Tateyama carded identical round of four-under 68 to go into the lead at four-under 140.

At Grand Blanc (Michigan), Daniel Chopra's fortunes kept oscillating as he carded a one-under 71 to be tied 43rd after a rain-hit first round of the $4.8 million Buick Open here.

At the top, former U.S. Masters champion Mike Weir of Canada carded a nine-under 63, including five birdies on his final six holes, to be the sole leader after the opening round.

Weir held a one-shot lead over Fijian Vijay Singh, who hit nine birdies against a solitary bogey, to be ahead of The Open champion, American Tiger Woods (66). The Indian-born Swede Chopra fired four birdies against three bogeys on the weather-hit which did not allow several players to complete their rounds. — Agencies
