`Tribunal's directives in releasing water to Karaikal not adhered to'

Pondicherry: PMK Parliamentary party leader M. Ramadoss has said `failure' to implement the interim award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal over the years has caused immense losses in the farm sector in the Karaikal region.

Mr. Ramadoss, in a release recently, said he had brought to the notice of the Union Minister for Water Resources the predicament of the region, lying at the tail end of the Cauvery, over the last 15 years with the Cauvery water playing truant. The directives of the Tribunal to release the water to Karaikal were not adhered to, he said.

The interim award of the Tribunal in 1991 stipulated 205 tmc feet of water for Tamil Nadu and 6 tmc feet for Karaikal. Except for a couple of years, water was not released for the last one and half decades. The Cauvery River Water Authority, under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, lacked teeth to ensure proper implementation of the Tribunal award by the concerned State. Chief Ministers of the riparian States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Pondicherry are the other members of the Authority. A reservoir should be constructed in Karaikal so that it would help farmers, he said.
