Residents alert officials about breach in canal

Officials closed the gates of the canal at Kembhavi preventing a disaster

GULBARGA: Residents of the Muddi Tanda in Shahapur taluk in Gulbarga district had a miraculous escape thanks to the timely action of officials of the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigama Ltd. (KBJNL) who stopped release of water into the canal after a serious breach at the 12th km of the Jewargi Branch Canal (JBC) was noticed on Friday.

According to the reports reaching here, people of the Muddi Tanda alerted the KBNJL officials about the breach in the canal and water rushing towards the tanda after flooding the agriculture fields. The officials closed the gates of the canal at Kembhavi in Surpur taluk preventing a disaster.

The reports said that at the time of the breach more than 500 cusecs of water was flowing in the canal and the breach which was first seen in about a metre in the main canal in the afternoon suddenly increased. When the water was ultimately stopped about 20 metres of the canal had breached.

Standing crops in more than 300 acres of land in the Muddi Tanda was submerged in the floodwaters.

Water was reported to have entered one house in the Tanda. A team of senior officials of the KBJNL are camping in the area assessing the damage and taking emergency steps by placing the sand bags. Repair work of the breached portion is likely to be taken up immediately.

The stoppage of the water in the canal will affect standing crop in the command area of the Jewargi Branch Canal. The KBJNL officials promised that the repair work will be taken up on an emergency basis and completed at the earliest to ensure that crops in the command area are not affected.
