Set right lapses in sanctioning of colleges: MLA

Special Correspondent

`Backward areas have been discriminated against in sanctioning of colleges'

  • Of the 130 PU colleges sanctioned on June 1, eight were allotted to Holenarasipura taluk alone and five to Ramanagara taluk
  • Only two colleges each were sanctioned to Chamarajanagar and Kolar districts
  • 90 per cent of the colleges allotted have gone in favour of constituencies represented by members of ruling parties

BANGALORE: R. Dhruvanarayana, Congress MLA, has urged Governor T.N. Chaturvedi to take steps to set right the "lapses" in sanctioning of colleges by the H.D. Kumaraswamy Government. Of the 130 pre-university colleges sanctioned on June 1, eight were allotted to Holenarasipura taluk alone and five to Ramanagara taluk. Backward districts have been discriminated against in sanctioning of colleges. Only two colleges each were sanctioned to Chamarajanagar and Kolar districts. So far, the coalition Government has sanctioned 194 pre-university colleges and 340 high schools, he has said.

The decision to sanction 130 colleges was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on June 1.

Around 90 per cent of the colleges allotted have gone in favour of constituencies represented by members of ruling parties and only a negligible percentage of colleges have been sanctioned to constituencies represented by members of Opposition parties, Mr. Dhruvanarayana has said.

The Nanjundappa Committee on regional imbalances has favoured sanctioning of more schools and colleges to backward taluks. But it is unfortunate that backward taluks, including Chamarajanagar, have been ignored while sanctioning new colleges, Mr. Dhruvanarayana has said. The Government has sanctioned eight colleges to Bangalore Rural district, three each to Davangere and Chitradurga, two to Kolar, five to Shimoga, six to Tumkur, eight to Mysore, six to Mandya, two to Chamaranagar, 19 to Hassan, three to Chikmagalur, two to Udupi, five to Dakshina Kannada, eight to Gulbarga, seven to Bidar, four to Koppal, six to Bellary, 10 to Belgaum, four to Bagalkot, eight to Bijapur, three to Haveri, two to Dharwad, five to Gadag and two to Uttara Kannada.
