Hari Krishna stays in the lead

NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna continued to lead in the Marx Gyorgy memorial chess tournament after all three games ended with honours even in the sixth round on Thursday. Hari (4) drew with Hungary's Peter Acs in 34 moves after playing with white pieces.

Ukraine's Zahar Efimenko (3.5) and China's Wang Yue (3) battled it out for 37 moves in Sicilian Rossolimo while Hungarians Zoltan Almasi (3.5) and Ferenc Berkes (2.5) called truce in just 24 moves of Sicilian Najdorf.

Five on top

GMs Neelotpal Das and R.B. Ramesh along with IMs S. Kidambi, S. Satyapragyan and P. Konguvel were among the leaders with two points each after the second round of Badalona International Open tournament.

Prasanna Rao drew with a higher-rated rival from Peru while Woman GM Aarthie Ramaswamy and Swati Mohota lost to Spanish opponents.

Indians fare poorly

All four Indians in the Dutch Open finished poorly in Dieren with Dibyendu Barua crashing to a 22-move loss at the hands of Dutch IM Herman Grooten in the ninth and final round.

Following the second successive loss, Barua (5) joined Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury in the joint 23rd spot. Chowdhury drew with Dutch Wim Heemskerk in 23 moves. Roktim Bandyopadhyay (4.5) lost to local Floris van Assendelft in 38 moves and was tied for the 38th place.

Second seed Frisbo Nijboer (7.5) of the Netherlands drew with countryman Sipke Ernest in 43 moves to take the title.

Woman GM Tania Sachdev (5) lost to Russian GM Alexander Cherniaev in the 10th and penultimate round of the Biel Masters in Switzerland.

IM norm aspirant S.P. Sethuraman (4.5) lost to lower-rated Frenchman Vincent Martinez while Woman IM Kruttika Nadig (5) drew with German Claus Andok. Three players share the lead with 7.5 points.
