BANGALORE: The Government on Friday decided on a massive housing programme for the poor in Bangalore and to step up the site allocation programme of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). The coalition government, which has been in office for six month, has decided to form and allot 50,000 house sites and build one lakh houses for the poor. Addressing presspersons here after a meeting with Minister for Housing D.T. Jayakumar and Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) officials, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said the programme would be launched on Independence Day. A committee headed by the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister will be constituted to prepare the plan. Officials of the KHB, the Karnataka Slum Development Board, the BDA and the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will jointly implement the plan. The committee has been asked to submit the report within a few days, he said. The Chief Minister said 50,000 house sites would be formed and one lakh houses (in the form of flats with each having one or two bedrooms) would be constructed for poor families living in Bangalore. One thousand houses each would be constructed in all district headquarter cities and 500 houses each in taluk headquarter towns. All the houses would be distributed to eligible beneficiaries at minimum rates or free of cost, Mr. Kumaraswamy said. Besides these, the Government had decided to build three lakh houses in rural areas as promised in the Budget for 2006-07. Mr. Kumaraswamy said all housing plans would be implemented according to a schedule and the Government would encourage the participation of private parties in housing projects. Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa was present at the press conference.
