Rain claims seven lives in East Godavari

    Kakinada: Seven persons were killed in various parts of the district due to rain during the last 24 hours. While three persons -- Yamanavalasa Abbulu, 50, his wife Eswari, 35, and his son Subrahmanyam, 4, died when a banyan tree collapsed on their thatched house in Yelesweram, Chodi Durga Prasad, 9, a fourth class student of ashram school at Gotlapalem village of Addateegala mandal died when a tree fell on him.

    Dasari Katamaswamy, 48, was killed in wall collapse at Muleru village of Gangavaram mandal, while Veeramsetti Rama Rao, 50, of Veerabhadrapuram was washed away in a stream in Addateegala mandal.

    In Peddapuram town, Vedurupaka Veerabhadram, 45, was electrocuted when he came in contact with a wire in the early hours of Friday.

    Ex gratia

    Collector M. Subrahmanyam said that Rs.50,000 each would be paid as ex gratia to the families of the deceased under the Apadbandhu scheme subject to the eligibility criteria.

    The District Collctor said Rs.10, 000 would be paid to the family of the student, as he was minor.

    The District Gazetted Officers' Association would extend an aid of Rs.10,000 to Durga Bhavani, who was injured in house collapse at Yelesweram. He said efforts were being made to get assistance to the affected families from the Chief Minister's relief fund.

    Bridge washed away

    All the hill streams and rivulets in the agency were in spate and all reservoirs were overflowing. The bridge across Sangavanka hill stream was washed away near AM Kota village in Maredumilli mandal.

    As a result, 19 villages in Y. Ramavaram and Maredumilli mandals were cut off from other areas in the agency. Flood water to the extent of 10,00 cusecs was released from Surampalem reservoir, the Collector said.

    Evacuation

    The district administration was making arrangements to evacuate people in low-lying areas in case of emergency.
