Auto fare hike demanded

PROTEST: Autorickshaw drivers staging a protest outside the office of the Regional Transport Authority in Mangalore demanding a revision of autorickshaw fares on Friday.

MANGALORE: Autorickshaws in the city did not function today as he Dakshina Kannada Rickshaw Drivers' Association Co-ordination Committee held a strike in front of the office of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA).

According to the committee co-ordinator Vishnu Murthy, over 3,000 auto drivers took part in the strike. The committee demanded a minimum fare of Rs. 13 for a distance of 1.5 km and Rs. 8 for subsequent km. He said the RTA had not revised the fares since 2004 and the various operational inputs had gone up substantially.

The committee had asked to cancel the free waiting period and impose a fee of Rs. 5 for a waiting period of 15 minutes. The night shift fares should also be reverted to one and half system.
