Bangalore: Even small municipalities need trained staff, and hospitals across the country need paramedics. Not jobs the very bright or ambitious want to get into, but occupations that those who need them badly can get involved with if they receive appropriate training. The five-year-old Bangalore centre of the All India Institute of Local Self Governance is one of the 24 institutes in the country and is an autonomous educational and research institution. Its job-oriented courses are tailored for those with SSLC or PU pass, including those with minimum marks. The Institute offers a Local Self Government Diploma and other diplomas for Sanitary Inspectors, Food Safety Inspectors and postgraduate diplomas in Public Health Technology and Hospital Administration. About 75 per cent of those selected recently by the Karnataka Public Service Commission for vacancies under the Directorate of Municipal Administration. About 8,000 candidates have passed out of the Institute, and while most have been employed in good positions in the public and private sectors, some have even found jobs overseas. Most are employed in jobs paying around Rs. 5,000 with government corporations, municipal councils, railways, hospitals and related sectors. The Institute regularly conducts workshops for heads and other staff of local bodies such as city municipal councils, city corporations and town panchayats, to educate them about the latest developments in urban governance.
