Corporate support for film awards

Staff Reporter

Sunfeast-Udaya TV awards function will be held in September

  • Dwarkish says Kannada film industry deserves such sponsorships
  • Winners in five categories will be selected through poll
  • A jury will select the other winners

Bangalore: It is time for another of those awards functions. Sunfeast, the biscuit brand from ITC Ltd., is joining hands with Udaya TV to present the first-ever Sunfeast-Udaya TV awards for Kannada films.

The ceremony will be held in the last week of September and promises to be a "star-studded affair."

The first edition of the awards will be a tribute to the memory of Kannada thespian Rajkumar.

Ravi Naware, Divisional Chief Executive, ITC Ltd. (Foods Division), said the event was part of a strategy to connect with the regional markets, this time with Karnataka. "We hope that this award show will grow in popularity and create a memorable creative platform for the Kannada film industry," he said. Veteran actor Dwarkish said the Kannada film industry had come a long way and deserved an event like this.

V.N. Subba Rao, who heads the jury, said the award winners in the five categories — best male actor, best femaleactress, best film, best music director and best film director — would be decided through a public opinion poll while the other award winners would be selected by a jury comprising members from the Kannada film industry.

While an occasional Kannada film does impress the jury at national film festivals, these have been rare and far between. Several people from the industry, including president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce Gangaraju, actress Tara, actor Murali, music director Guru Kiran, director Indrajit Lankesh and Selvam and Vijaya Kumar from Udaya TV were present.
