Nandini Satpathy passes away

BHUBANESWAR: Veteran Congress leader and former Orissa Chief Minister Nandini Satpathy passed away here on Friday evening. She was 75 and is survived by two sons.

Ms. Satpathy, whose political career spanned over three decades, was ailing for some time. Earlier in the day, she was admitted to the Capital Hospital where she died of a cardiac arrest at 8.20 p.m.

As a member of the Congress, Ms. Satpathy was elected to the Rajya Sabha and was a member of the Union Cabinet as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting between 1966 and 1969. She was a close associate of Indira Gandhi.

Ms. Satpathy was elected to the Assembly seven times in a row between 1972 and 2000 when she decided to quit active politics. She was Chief Minister for two terms. Her younger son, Tathagat Satpathy, is a sitting Biju Janata Dal MP from Dhenkanal.

She was a well-known Oriya writer and her works were translated and published in a number of languages.

The cremation will take place in Bhubaneswar tomorrow.
