Intake increase can be done in phases Sonia, Pranab attend meeting

NEW DELHI: As part of the ongoing efforts to evolve a consensus on reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) in Central educational institutions, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday held a discussion with Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss.

Dr. Ramadoss, who belongs to the Pattali Makkal Katchi, reportedly insisted on introducing the 27 per cent quota from the 2007-08 academic year on the plea that the OBCs had waited far too long for access to higher education.

The Group of Ministers, which went into the issue, prefers phased introduction of OBC reservation.

On increasing student intake to ensure that the OBC reservation did not eat the seats for the unreserved category, Dr. Ramadosstold the Prime Minister that the exercise could be undertaken in a phased manner as and when infrastructure was put in place.

United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee attended the meeting.
