Vaiko's charge against Karunanidhi

Special Correspondent

Row over training Sri Lankan policemen

CHENNAI: General secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) Vaiko accused Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of not showing genuine interest to stop training Sri Lankan police in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement here, he said the training was given up only because of the MDMK taking the issue to the notice of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Mr.Vaiko said he had sent a fax message to Dr. Singh on August 2, seeking his intervention to stop the programme and despatch the Sri Lankan policemen to their country immediately. Dr.Singh had also assured the MDMK chairman L.Ganesan on August 3 that he would immediately attend to the issue, he added.

When the issue was raised by Leader of the MDMK Legislature Party M.Kannappan on August 2, Mr.Karunanidhi did not inform the House that he would take it up with the Centre or he would take steps to stop the training programme, he said.

Mr.Karunanidhi told the Assembly on Friday morning that the responsibility of relieving the people of the confusion in this regard vested not only with the State Government but also with the Centre, Mr.Vaiko said.

However, in the afternoon, he informed the House that Chief Secretary to the State Government had taken up the issue of training the Sri Lankan police with the Union Home Secretary on August 2, besides sending a letter the next day. The Chief Minister also informed the House that the trainees were sent back to Sri Lanka on August 3.

Why had not the Chief Minister shown genuine concern on the issue and taken it up with the Prime Minister, he asked.
