CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has told a delegation of advocates that the issues surrounding the newly notified amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) would be sorted out soon. When the delegation, comprising All India Bar Association vice-chairman S. Prabakaran and Madurai Bar Association secretary Ramasamy, met him at the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam headquarters on Thursday, Mr. Karunanidhi said Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran had already taken up the issue with the Prime Minister and the Union Law Minister. The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry has called for an extraordinary meeting on August 5 to discuss the effects of the amendments. D. Selvam, member of the statutory body, said individual letters had been sent to office-bearers of all advocate associations in the State. The letter said the amendments had created "widespread unrest among the members of the Bar." Hence, a meeting had been convened to "ease the situation and to suggest to the Government of Tamil Nadu not to give effect to the amendments."
