BANGALORE: Following unscheduled load shedding announced by the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) in various parts of the city for 15 days from Sunday, water supply is also likely to be hit all over the city. The power disruption is likely to affect pumping of water from the ground level reservoirs to the 51 pumping stations and to overhead tanks from where water is supplied into the lines. With the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) using captive power in Malleswaram, High Grounds, Hegganahalli, Hosahalli and Racecourse ground level reservoirs, areas getting water supply from these reservoirs are not likely to be affected. BWSSB Chief Engineer (Maintenance) L.S. Khandappanavar told The Hindu on Friday that areas in the east and south-east divisions were likely to be severely hit as pumping of water here was totally dependent on power. Water to the city is drawn from the Cauvery and conveyed through a channel to Netkal balancing reservoir and transferred to the treatment complex at Torekadanahalli through gravity mains. After treating water at the treatment plants of Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage I, II, III and IV, filtered water is pumped to the city through three stages of pumping stations located at Torekadanahalli, Harohalli and Tataguni through steel transmission mains. Pumping is not likely to be affected at these stations as they depend on power supplied from the Somanahalli grid. But water pumping at Tippagondanahalli and Tavarekere reservoirs will be affected because these stations get supply from the local transmission lines, according to the Chief Engineer. Pointing out that efforts would be made to reschedule supply hours is some areas, Mr. Khandappanavar appealed to the people to bear the inconvenience, as it was inevitable.
