KOZHIKODE: P. Michael Vetha Siromony, joint secretary, National Human Rights Commission, urged social workers to be the voice of the voiceless people and a leader of the leaderless. He was inaugurating `Collabre `06'- National Seminar Series II organised by the Department of Social Work, St. Joseph's College, Devagiri, here on Saturday. Mr. Michael said society expected a lot from social workers. However, society may not repay them fully. He said that without Medha Patker, social activist, the Government would not have gone in for a rehabilitation policy. The tribal people are the first casualty of any development project. "The question is: who should pay for the development- is it they (tribal people) or us?" he said. He said disaster management was a challenge to the social worker. He said the joint family system in Kerala was giving way to nuclear families, creating problems. C.R. Neelakandan Namboothiri, environmental activist, delivered the keynote address. Fr. Joseph Vayalil, Principal, St. Joseph's College, Devagiri; P.M. Mathew, Head of the Department of Social Work, St. Joseph's College; Sucharita Hota, lecturer, the Department of Social Work; Allan John, Head of the Department of Social Work, Sacred Heart College, Thirupathur; Philip K. Antony, convener, golden jubilee committee of the college, and Tomy Jacob, lecturer, the Department of Social Work, also spoke.
