Special Correspondent
Jayathilak
KOZHIKODE: A. Jayathilak who has taken charge as Kozhikode District Collector said here on Saturday that he would remain accessible to the public. "I intend to keep the doors of my camp office (at his residence) and office at the civil station open to the public," Dr Jayathilak said at a Meet-the Press programme organised by Kozhikode Press Club. He said he would also welcome messages to his e-mail id: dckzk@kerala.nic.in. Dr Jayathilak has initiated a novel venture by offering visitors to his office tender coconut juice instead of tea. He says the initiative would benefit coconut growers. The District Collector said he would take measures to provide career counselling to students of class IX, X, Plus One and Plus Two. In the absence of proper counselling, students in the State focussed only on engineering and medical courses. The District Collector said he was examining the demand for conservation of wetlands and its mangrove vegetation in the heart of the city. Dr. Jayathilak, who had spearheaded tourism development projects both in Kerala and in Chattisgarh before being posted as Kozhikode District Collector, was confident that strategies could be evolved to prepare a tourism circuit for North Kerala with Kozhikode as its hub. He said moves had been initiated to liven up the district's cultural scene. A request had been made to K.Jayakumar, former Kozhikode District Collector who is now posted in the Ministry of Culture, New Delhi, to sanction for Kozhikode a `qawwali' programme being organised by Union Government as part of its efforts to promote cultural programmes. Dr. Jayathilak said even though Kozhikode had not been chosen for city development under the Jawaharlal Nehru Mission, it would still be possible to raise funds for city development under the scheme meant for smaller cities. About the ongoing controversy over the Corporation's waste disposal plant at Njeliyanparambu, Dr. Jayathilak was of the view that a dumping site should be identified for North Kerala region instead of every local body setting up a waste disposal facility.
