Making a career out of a rich voice

Special Correspondent

It can also be a creative endeavour

  • FM radio boom has created market for voices
  • A new opportunity is in dubbing of tele films

BANGALORE: If your are blessed with a good voice which can flow fluently in a number of languages, you may have a great career ahead.

Not just musicians but many others are now making a career out of their resonant voices. Partly due to the boom in the film, television and animal sectors, voices that sound good and can bring out just the right inflexion are in demand. Besides money, it can also be a creative career.

There are recorded messages called `tele prompts' to inform you on your mobile phones that the number you called is not reachable or that such a number does not exist and asks you to try again. If such voices are not smooth and polite enough, the mobile service provider will lose customers. Then there are films made by corporates that need a commentary with just enough voice modulation to hold the attention of viewers. There are promos at malls, television commercials and advertisement films and the ultimate prize, dubbing for films and actors.

The FM radio boom has created its own market for voices that glide over jingles. Airlines need announcers. It is said that many voice-over artists, as they like to be called, may earn up to a lakh of rupees a month once they are established in their field.

It is a full-time career for them but there are students and young professionals moonlighting who earn anything from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 5,000 for lending their voice to radio jingles. Unlike a recorded jingle, there is no scope for a retake here, You just have to be good enough and even ad-lib when necessary, some students who have tried their hand at such jobs say.

Another new opportunity now beginning gather momentum is the dubbing of tele films from overseas for Indian channels.
