ABRACADABRA: Jadugar Anand performing one of his tricks in Hubli.
HUBLI: Three years ago, he brought an elephant on stage and made it vanish into thin air. Now he brings the pachyderm on stage within the fraction of a second from nowhere. Jadugar Anand is back in Hubli after mesmerising the residents of the twin cities during his last visit. This time he has in his quiver, several new tricks and improvised versions of his regular tricks and illusions. "Mayalok," as Anand calls his magic show, began here on Friday. Apart from creating things from nowhere to transforming one thing into another, Mr. Anand makes seemingly impossible things look easier and the sheer pace at which he creates his illusions leave the audience mesmerising. Mr. Anand cuts a girl into two with an electric saw, converts a girl into a "zig-zag lady" and within minutes she is back as a normal lady. A young man is transformed into a beautiful lady and the replica of the Statue of Liberty vanishes into thin air. At one point, Mr. Anand's body becomes permeable and girls pass through his body. What makes the "Mayalok" look different is its dramatic character. Jadugar Anand presents some of his illusions in a more dramatic manner accompanied by supporting theatrical sets. And there are comic interludes performed a duo of midgets. Mr. Anand calls his magic "innocent entertainment", but there is a serious message also. The audiovisual presentation shows how the corrupt politicians have swindled everything that should have gone to the people and the magic trick that follows it shows how the demon of corruption has usurped the temple of Bharat Mata and taken her place. Jadugar Anand's will be creating his "Mayalok" at the Sawai Gandharva Hall in Deshpandenagar.
