KOLLAM: Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan on Friday inaugurated the second phase of the project on awareness on cultivation of medicinal plants organised by Rehabilitation Plantations Limited (RPL). At a function at RPL's Kulathupuzha estate, Mr. Gurudasan said the company was doing social work through the project. He said the company should expand the scope of the project since many medicinal plants were facing the threat of extinction. Even the uses of many of the medicinal plants were being forgotten, he said. Projects like the one undertaken by RPL will serve to revive the medicinal applications of these plants. He said the State Government would submit a proposal to the Centre for the constitution of a Cashew Board. Saplings of medicinal plans grown by the RPL were distributed on the occasion. Presenting the company report at the function, RPL senior manager K. Rajendranath said the project aimed at overcoming the shortage of medicinal plants through peoples' participation. Not only are saplings distributed under the project, but the mode of cultivating each sapling is also explained. The project is being supported by the National Medicinal Plant Board. RPL chairman C.K. Vishwanathan welcomed the gathering. Managing director B. Muraleedharan proposed a vote of thanks.
