SALEM: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam inaugurated the North- East crafts fair at the Deiveegam Kalyana Mandapam here on Saturday. The fair, organised by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited, displays a variety of handicrafts and handloom products from the seven North Eastern states, a release said. According to the release, the fair is organised to promote the sale of handicrafts and to create awareness among people about handicrafts and handlooms. The products on the display include cane and bamboo crafts, artistic textiles, woodcarvings, jewellery, brass and bell metal products and traditional varieties of baskets. The hand woven fabrics with rich and symbolic ornamentation, tribal ornaments made of bamboo, glass beads and silver, carpets, toys and dolls made of straw and clay, leather bags, dry flowers, terracotta items are also on the display. The famous Kauna grass cushions and mattress of Manipur, bamboo artistic cap from Mizoram and wooden handicrafts and basketry items from Nagaland are also exhibited in the fair, the release said. Demonstration of skill and craftsmanship by selected craftsmen will also be held at the exhibition venue, the release added. \ People can visit the fair from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It will remain open till August 20.
