Premiership approved

KIEV: Parliament on Friday approved Viktor Yanukovych to become Ukraine's Prime Minister — a stunning turnaround for this ex-Soviet republic less than two years after pro-Western reformers led massive street protests against Mr. Yanukovych's run for the presidency. Lawmakers approved Mr. Yanukovych in a 271-9 vote after President Viktor Yushchenko — Mr. Yanukovych's presidential rival in 2004 — nominated his former rival as Premier. Mr. Yushchenko said the alternative — dissolving Parliament and calling new elections — would have been a blow to the country. — AP
