Spadework for superspecialty hospital in Salem begins

Special Correspondent

SALEM: The Union Ministry of Health, together with the Tamil Nadu Government, has initiated the preliminary steps for establishing the Rs.120-crore superspecialty hospital, akin to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, at Salem.

According to Agricultural Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam, the Ministry, as directed by Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, would send medical experts to Chennai on Monday to discuss the issue with the State Government. The design and construction of the hospital would be finalised shortly.

Inaugurating a cobalt therapy unit at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital here on Saturday, Mr. Arumugam said the State Government would provide the land for the hospital, which he said was the need of the people of this backward region.

Allaying apprehensions among some people that Salem was chosen for the project instead of Tiruchi, Mr. Arumugam said Salem had received what it immensely needed. "Likewise Tiruchi, as the Chief Minister pointed out, would get what it needs," he said. Political motives should not be attributed to this issue, as it had been allotted to Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association president G. Prakasam said the first instalment of funds should be sanctioned immediately. "Further delay would cause concern among the Salem citizens."
